Jesus uses a vivid metaphor to describe the essence of the Christian life as union with Christ. He is the vine, we are branches, and the vinedresser is the Father. It is a wonderful vision of the Christian life which comes with a warning to dead branches - those connected to Jesus, but not spiritually alive.
